Teaching

Sam King is an interdisciplinary educator, storyteller, and global thinker engaging diverse audiences in exploring the moral, spiritual, and ecological dimensions of our time.

He has taught courses in philosophy, religion, English, environmental science, and interdisciplinary humanities in classrooms ranging from high schools to universities—and from Peru to Sri Lanka. As a Fulbright Scholar, Sam taught at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and conducted field research on rural Buddhism. He has also led an intercultural exchange program in South Asia and taught at institutions such as The Hotchkiss School and Phillips Academy Andover Summer.

Most recently, Sam has offered a course on Emerging Earth Leadership for high school students in South, Central, and North America with Earth Charter International. He has also offered open-access courses on Journey of the Universe and The Worldview of Thomas Berry for adults through the Deeptime Network, inviting global learners into expansive conversations on cosmology, ecology, and ethics. At Yale, Sam has served as a Teaching Fellow at the School of the Environment and collaborated with Professors Mary Evelyn Tucker and John Grim to craft a six-course Coursera series on the ecological wisdom of the world’s religions.

Sam holds an M.A. in Religion and Ecology from Yale University with a certificate in Educational Leadership, and an M.A. in Creative Writing from Dartmouth College, where his studies focused on narrative nonfiction and ecological storytelling. He earned a B.A. in Environmental Studies and Religion from Bowdoin College.

Bridging scientific insights and humanistic inquiry, Sam’s teaching aims to foster ecological imagination and creative dialogue across cultures, inspiring a meaningful sense of participation in the evolving Earth community.
